We were commissioned by the agency glut Berlin to design a cube and a stairway stage at Europaplatz, near Berlin’s main station. Given our interest in exploring and transforming spaces through painting, this project immediately presented a fascinating challenge.

The cube, with its four identical sides and strict geometry, inspired us to create spatial trompe-l’œil effects and use bold shapes and color to generate depth. Our goal was to imaginatively expand the perceived space of the cube’s walls.

The title of the piece, „Extended Play,“ references the EP (Extended Play) record format, which typically features four songs. Music, especially the improvisational elements – such as in jazz – is a strong influence on our work. Expanding the realm of ideas and opening ourselves to new paths, concepts, and imaginations are key aspects of our artistic approach.

For the stairway stage, we took a more improvisational approach. After defining the basic parameters, we worked playfully with the surfaces in the space. The urban environment around Berlin’s main train station, with its local and long-distance transport systems – S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, and regional trains – created a certain rhythm that inspired our work. The number of steps and the linear architecture reminded us of a musical staff, which led to the title „Akkord“. A chord (german: Akkord) consists of at least three harmonizing notes – a fitting metaphor for our public space painting.

For the execution, we once again used the sustainable @keimfarben mineral facade paint, which we value for its high quality and coverage.
